Jamie Foxx stars as Dave Franco and Jamie Foxx is the star of "Day Shift", a new movie about vampire hunting. The movie is about a blue collar working dad who wants to provide for his child's happiness. But, his mundane job at the pool in San Fernando Valley serves as a front for hunting and killing Vampires as part of an international Union of vampiric hunters.
It sounds like a fun idea, but can J.J. Perry bring it to life?
Jamie Foxx is seen shooting at a woman who turns out to have been a vampire in the opening scene of "Day Shift". This then leads to a wild fight between them. I felt that the movie had a lot of fun using this type of ragdoll Physics in its action sequences, which makes them pop in an action scene that many other Netflix action movies or action blockbusters don't. When you watch a scene like this, it is easy to remember the old saying "action speaks louder that words", and while I agree with the statement, I think the key to "Day Shift's" success is the way it uses dialogue and action to develop the characters and further the plot. Jamie Foxx's role as the vampire is finally defeated and he engages in a humorous exchange with his partner about how "he thought she was going to transform into a bat" or something. These are the moments that make "Day Shift", a movie unlike any other.
Day Shift is another fun, non-serious film that I felt like I could genuinely enjoy the whole way through. I found it entertaining and not too complicated. It featured great action and was unique. It had good humor and I found myself laughing out loud a fair bit. It also drew inspiration from the brilliant vampire films Blade and Lost Boys, two of my all-time favorite films. The acting was excellent, the directing was fantastic and the cinematography was very good. Day Shift is an enjoyable movie that's not too serious and easy to watch. It's very entertaining.
Day Shift was a mixed film. The movie has a lot to offer, including some good action and characters (the brothers and Seth), while the villain is terrible and the characters are very average. It felt like some scenes had been left out. Bud's neighbor behaves like she's a friend, even though she only had 3 minutes of screentime before the final scene. This makes the characters who are better than others shine even more. The movie is enjoyable overall, (view blog) but there were some things that could have been done better.
The movie is worth the effort thanks to Snoop Dogg. Snoop Dogg is simply a great guy. He's cool.
